Teignmouth RFC 1st XV 22-30 Crediton
TEIGNMOUTH RFC 1st XV welcomed Crediton to Bitton Park on Saturday, March 7, for the Geoff Warne Memorial Match in honour of a former Teigns chairman and coach and Crediton captain.
Teigns kicked the first points of the game with fly-half Luke Atkinson slotting a penalty.
Repeat offenses saw Crediton punished, one for offside and one for a high tackle, Atkinson making it 9-0 with the boot.
The visitors came back though and they scored the first try of the afternoon, cutting the deficit to four points.
A fourth Atkinson penalty kick pushed Teignmouth further ahead only for Crediton to quickly respond with their second unconverted try.
Crediton took their first lead of the game courtesy of a great interception, running the pitch to then cross under the posts.
Teignmouth roared back with a try of their own in this back-and-forth affair, Jordan Hellier setting up Jason Jarvis and Atkinson successfully kicking one more.
The final points of the first half saw Crediton take a 19-24 advantage into the break.
An Atkinson penalty trimmed the deficit once more but a pair of Crediton three-pointers made the difference in a low-scoring half, steering them to a 22-30 win on their travels.
Former Teignmouth duo Sam and Joe Simmons were on hand to present the Geoff Warne Memorial Cup to the victors.
This defeat leaves the Teigns hovering one place and one point above the South West Two drop zone.
George Franklin, the Teignmouth captain, had plenty of reasons for describing the result as ‘frustrating’.
Franklin added: “We did really well to build a score in the first half, unfortunately Crediton seemed to score each time they entered our 22.
“We had a couple of missed opportunities and conceded some cheap tries.
“I thought we played pretty well overall. We were bitterly disappointed to come away from the game without any points.”
