NEW Cross are still in with a sniff of making the Devon Two promotion playoffs after defeating Exeter Engineers 34-31 in an entertaining run around.
The Kingsteignton outfit could still clamber from fifth to second if they win their last three games AND results go their way elsewhere.
“If we can get a win over North Tawton week, it does keep us in the hunt, albeit unlikely, for a second-place finish,” said senior player Ryan Wotton.
“We will need to be focussed and try and avenge and close away defeat to Tawts on a very wet pitch in December.
As the Engineers didn’t have a front row, uncontested scrums were order of the day, which allowed some selection leeway.
“We took the opportunity to give some game time to those who needed it, and rest a few battered bodies,” said Wotton.
New Cross prop Cam Rideout stood out in a fast, flowing game and bagged a brace.
“North Tawton at home this week will be a much tougher game as their form has been very good in the second half of this season,” said Wotton.
“Unfortunately two key players – Rob Pedrick and Red Milford –are missing this week. But that’s life at level nine.”
