PATCHED-up Teignmouth RFC went down 68-7 at Wadebridge in South West Two.
The Wadebridge groundsmen worked hard to get the pitch in a playable state after the recent storms. Although the going was heavy, both sides attempted to play some entertaining and competitive rugby.
Injuries and work commitments meant Teignmouth travelled light, which meant players adapting to different roles, especially in the backs. Despite the disruptions, the Teigns competed well and felt the scoreline was a little lopsided.
Andy Webber, one of the players who came into the travelling party, scored Teignmouth’s solitary try. Jack Mayne kicked the conversion.
Colin Stewart, the Teignmouth coach, described it as ‘a fantastic team effort’ despite the scoreline.
Dan Woolnough was at the front of the queue for the man-of-the-match award. Stewart praised Woolnough’s control of the ball, his continual attempts to generate quick ruck ball and for staying positive throughout.
Defeat leaves Teignmouth hovering one point and one place above the bottom three. North Petherton, the team below them, have two games in hand.
The Teigns have no game this Saturday. They are due to play promotion-chasing Tiverton at Bitton Park on February 14.
George Franklin, the Teignmouth RFC captain, said: “We showed a lot of heart, and never threw the towel in, but we were pretty limited with multiple players playing out of position.
"Credit to Wadebridge: they played very well and deserved their victory."
Meanwhile, local rivals Newton Abbot RFC 1st XV had no fixture scheduled for the last day of January.
They were looking forward to a cup final clash with Cullompton RFC at Rackerhayes this Sunday but this has been postponed to a later date, their rearranged league meeting against Barnstaple IIs taking precedent on the Saturday.
