IT WAS cup week in the South Devon and Torbay Table Tennis league, although there were three re-arranged third division fixtures played as well.

In the doubles cup, fourth division Torbay Academy 6 (Phil Jewell, Kris Adamczak and Marco Pilloni) had the biggest win of the round as they made good use of their generous handicap to defeat NA Owls 28-8.

The only other one-sided tie was Teignmouth Aces’ 26-10 victory over Brixham Sharks. David Davies, Steve Cooper and Andy Clitheroe not allowing the Sharks a single set win.

All the rest of the doubles encounters were decided in the final set. Torbay Academy 2 (Peter Moretta, Ed Damanskas and Ionel Ichim) overcame their clubmates Torbay Academy 7, 19-15.

NA Harriers, although on top throughout, never really got away from Teignmouth Delinquents until the final set. Albie Andrews, Lee Raymond and Mike Dummett eventually winning the tie for the Harriers 21-15.

In an all-Newton Abbot affair NA Kestrels, who had a busy end of the week, edged past NA Merlins 20-16.

The Kestrels’ five-man team were at full stretch playing three matches in two days, Rob Williams, Richard Hathaway and David Doxsey playing in this handicap doubles match.

Meanwhile, the only singles cup match played this week saw a changed NA Kestrels team of Fred Wakefield, Jackie Whitehorn and David Doxsey getting the better of the Brixham Seals 21-15.

To complete a successful trio of matches for the NA Kestrels they beat their closest rivals at the top of the third division in a league match 7-3, Richard Hathaway with an excellent maximum for the Kestrels.

Robert Austen was unbeaten as Torre Spartans defeated Torbay Academy 5, 6-4, and it was a similar scoreline as NA Kites narrowly defeated Torbay Academy 4 despite a fine maximum from the Academy’s Aaron Southgate.
