Teignmouth 18 – 57 Weston-super-Mare
Weston-super-Mare’s unbeaten run at the top of the Regional 2 South West League proved too much for Teignmouth when the two sides met on Saturday (October 4).
The Somerset side, who moved across to the South West League from the Regional 2 Severn League this season, came into the fixture unbeaten and three points ahead of Teignmouth.
The visitors brought along their try-scoring machine, winger Hayden Main, who managed to put five over the line contributing to Weston’s domination and stamping out any hope Teignmouth had of getting a foothold in the game.
The home side didn’t give up and kept plugging away but were further let down as set pieces near the Weston try line didn’t go to plan, resulting in chances to score going begging.
The final score probably didn’t reflect their efforts and Teignmouth’s two tries came from second row Jack Bowen.
Centre, Luke Atkinson, proved his worth as he added to the tally by slotting two penalties between the posts as well as a conversion.
Teignmouth’s long-standing hooker and former captain Pete Parsons was man of the match as he celebrated his 300th cap for the club.
Next week, Teignmouth hope to dust themselves off as they take on Okehampton away on October 11.
Teignmouth’s second team didn’t fare much better as they lost by seven points away against Topsham 3s. Teigns began the game playing into a strong wind and conceded twice as the pace of Topsham’s back line showed up Teignmouth’s lacklustre tackling. However, after a stern half-time talk and the wind at their backs, Teignmouth got straight back into the game scoring from the kick off with a great run from Will Burton, finished by Jamie Collins. Teigns had a chance to equalise in the last five minutes but unfortunately knocked the ball over the line. The final score was Topsham 24 – 17 Teignmouth. Fin Pitman put in a shift to be named man of the match.
Teignmouth’s Colts saved the club from a complete whitewash with an emphatic 51 - nil victory over coastal rivals Brixham. Playing ahead of the sponsors’ lunch, the young men put on a blistering show at Bitton Park. Player of the match was Joe Brookfield.
Teignmouth’s ladies played their first league game of the season against Somerset visitors Wellington Vixens on Sunday (October 5). Despite conceding early in the game, Teignmouth regrouped and battled hard with some great scrummaging and set piece play. However, Wellington were quick to capitalise on Teignmouth errors and managed to cross the line a couple more times before half-time. Teignmouth settled better into the second half and held well defensively to only concede one more try. However, despite some promising attacking play were unable to convert possession into points. Teignmouth’s Forward of the match was Elly Meacham and the back of the match went to Abbie Warwick.
The ladies’ next league game is at home against Withycombe on Saturday (October 11)
Two players made their senior debuts for this game. And, to prove that Teignmouth Rugby Club really is one big family, both debutants were playing alongside their mothers. Flankers Jacqueline McLellan and Tillie Jones joined their front row mums Jane McLellan and Laura Hallett for the first time.
