NEW Dawlish mayor, Bill Forrow, is not only the youngest one Dawlish has yet seen but is the longest serving councillor and the only mayor to be born in the town he now serves.

His parents arrived as children in the 1930s and Cllr Forrow was born and lived for 20 years in Barton Crescent. He attended local schools before going to South Devon Tech and becoming a nurse.

Cllr Furrow's first memory of getting involved with politics was when he sent a letter to the Dawlish Gazette protesting at there not being a fair that year. His next political stance was when he was about 12 and he did what he thought was a big campaign, to stop a playground being built in Newhay.

'Since a very young age I have had some kind of political interest, even when I was at school,' said Cllr Forrow.

He was first elected to Dawlish Town Council in 1987 and has been involved ever since.

'There is a level of criteria that councillors look for when nominating a new mayor and that varies from person to person. I believes I was a good candidate due to the amount of service I have put in,' added Cllr Forrow with regards to his election.

'Now I'm mayor, there are many things that I have on my conscience which were not there before,' he continued. 'One of the things I feel is a challenge is trying to be constantly knowledgeable about what is happening in the town and the other thing is maintaining my standards as a model citizen. In my 16 years as councillor, I've seen people go before me who have taken it very seriously. Even when I'm driving in the car I have to be careful.'

Cllr Forrow's family have been very supportive throughout all of this and give him all their backing as mayor.

Cllr Forrow said that his main priorities for this year were green issues and reducing the amount of beaurocracy.

'The goose that lays the golden egg for our town is the green spaces and beaurocracy needs to be reduced.

'I want to try and use this post to encourage everybody who is doing good for the town. All those people, be they in the public eye or otherwise, I am behind them 100%,' concluded Cllr Forrow.
