FROM waste management to the walking dead, colleagues from Devon Contract Waste (DCW) took on an unusual challenge this October, helping bring the horrors of Halloween to life at Dartmoor Zoo.

The team donated their time to support the zoo’s popular ‘Night of the Dead - Zombie Survival Challenge’, transforming themselves into terrifying members of the undead for the special event.

Embracing the spooky theme, volunteers created their own costumes and make-up, incorporating elements of their DCW uniform into their zombie outfits.

The event challenged visitors to navigate the zoo grounds, completing tasks and evade ‘infected’ as they attempted to reach safety in a post-apocalyptic survival adventure.

As part of Dartmoor Zoo’s wider programme of seasonal activities, Night of the Dead helps attract visitors and generate vital income to support the zoo’s charitable work.

A long-standing customer of DCW, Dartmoor Zoo plays an important role in the local community through its conservation, education and animal welfare work. By volunteering at the Halloween event, DCW colleagues were able to extend their support beyond waste and recycling services they provide, helping the zoo create a memorable experience for visitors.

Olivia Crisp, Partnership and Community Engagement Manager at DCW, said: ‘We are always looking for opportunities to support organisations in our local community, and when Dartmoor Zoo asked for volunteers to help bring their Halloween event to life, our team did not hesitate to get involved.

‘The volunteers fully embraced the challenge, and it is a fantastic example of colleagues giving their time to support a valued local attraction.’

Amber Edgecombe, Events Manager at Dartmoor Zoo, added: ‘Night of the Dead has become a popular fixture in our events calendar, and it would not be possible without the support of volunteers.

‘We are grateful to the DCW team for getting involved and helping us create an immersive experience for our visitors’.

DCW, a subsidiary of SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK, has been managing business waste in Devon since 1989.
