SEVERAL more tonnes of red sandstone have collapsed into the sea below houses in Old Teignmouth Road, Dawlish.

Earlier this month, hundreds of tonnes of rock, earth and trees fell during a landslip that hit an area of the cliff the size of two double-decker buses.

A number of nearby homes were left closer to the edge, but their owners said they were confident their properties were not at risk. The land, which included the collapsed area, is owned by developer Character Homes, which is building a number of new properties in the area.

Company owner Michael Hogg said marine erosion had always been a problem in the area, but added that he was not concerned about his new properties because they were about 100m (330ft) back from the cliff edge. There have been three small collapses since the main fall, but on Friday night a more significant area of cliff disappeared and on Saturday it was seen still crumbling slowly into the sea.

'What was an almost straight line across the cliff after the first fall now has a distinct dome shape to it,' said a witness, John Southall. 'The roots of two sizable trees are clearly visible and it can only be a matter of time before they also fall.'

Shortly after the Old Teignmouth Road cliff fall, there was another landslide at Marine Parade, when part of a garden belonging to Westcliff House Care Home collapsed into properties. No-one was hurt, but the garden area is still blocked off.
