SABRE fencer Kira Roberts, of Bishopsteignton, was part of the England team which won gold at the Senior National Championships held at RAF Cosford, in the Midlands. In the individual competition, Roberts, who at 16 was one of the younger competitors, finished a credible 13th. Her efforts have resulted in her being selected for England's Commonwealth Games squad. Roberts' coach, Jan Lacey, of Dawlish, said: I was absolutely delighted with Kira's performance at the national championships. 'She attributed herself very well in the individual event where she was up against opponents older than herself. She showed great determination, and her mental approach was spot on. 'Helping England beat Scotland, Ireland and Wales to take gold was the icing on the cake for Kira,' he added. Roberts will now be focusing on the Commonwealth Games, which takes place in Northern Ireland, in November. 'Kira's selection for the games reflects the dedication she has shown to fencing,' said Lacey. 'I have high hopes for her, and the England team.'
