LIBERAL Democrats on Teignbridge Council have launched their own motion relating to the district’s asylum-seeking residents.
The motion, which will be put to members of the full council on Thursday, calls on the council to recognise ‘the vital contribution and impact of overseas born and asylum-seeking residents to the district’s economy, culture, and community life’.
Proposer Cllr David Palethorpe, deputy chairman of Teignbridge Council, says the motion aims to ‘celebrate Teignbridge’s long tradition of welcoming people from around the world — including recently refugees from Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine — and reaffirms the district’s commitment to equality, inclusion, and human dignity under the Equality Act 2010’.
The motion and Cllr Palethorpe’s comments follow a motion which will also go to Thursday’s meeting by Reform UK councillor Steve Horner calling for ‘transparency’ over the district’s housing of migrants and out residents welfare and needs first.
Cllr Palethorpe said: 'Teignbridge’s strength lies in its diversity.
‘People born outside the UK play an essential role in our NHS, schools, care homes, Armed Forces, and hospitality sector.
‘They help make South Devon the open and welcoming place to be proud of.
‘It’s also time for an honest, evidence-based national debate on immigration — one that’s grounded in facts, fairness, and compassion, not fear or misinformation.’
The motion thanks overseas-born members of the Armed Forces, international NHS and care staff, and teachers who serve the district. It also pledges support for local charities and community groups helping refugees and asylum seekers rebuild their lives.
Cllr Jackie Hook, who seconded the Lib Dem motion, said: ‘This is about respect and gratitude.
‘Our communities are richer because of those who have chosen to make Teignbridge their home.’
In figures released by another Lib Dem member, of the Teignbridge population of 135,000 there are 37 people seeking asylum and no hotels in the district are housing asylum seekers.
