This coastal holiday home backs onto Devon’s most popular smuggling route - and could be yours for £1.1m.

Beechwood House, which is part of Holcombe Hall, was built in 1899 for Joseph Harrison-Benn, a mill owner.

The grounds of the home lead to private access onto Smugglers Lane, the route that helped smugglers get their goods into Holcombe without going through the authorities.

The area along the Devon coast is well known for its connections to smuggling, such as the Parson and Clerk Rock in Dawlish, but Smugglers Lane is perhaps the best-known.

Holcombe Hall itself was developed into several homes in 2017, with Beechwood House offering three bedrooms, a bay-fronted sitting room and a kitchen/breakfast room.

The house also includes a master ensuite, a bathroom, a utility room, an entrance hall and basement storage.

The basement provides 3 rooms of storage with power and light with access from the inner hall, with plenty of room for a workshop space - or a smuggler’s den.

With tall ceilings and stained glass windows, the building also has a private terrace with sea views.

Frank Kelsall of Stags said: “Beechwood House is truly unique and beautifully renovated, developed from the original Holcombe hall, built in 1899 for Joseph Harrison-Ben.

“The striking features of tall ceilings, ornate mouldings and beautiful stained glass windows attracts a wide audience especially those seeking a waterside retreat or holiday home.
