The Shaldon and Teignmouth bonfire and fireworks display will go ahead this Saturday (November 1), despite fears that the event could be scuppered if beach hut owners failed to confirm they would vacate the area.
Teignmouth Town Council and Shaldon Parish Council have confirmed that plans for the event are all back ‘on track and going full scale ahead’.
Last week, Teignmouth Town Council warned that the event could be called off unless beach hut owners in the ‘safety exclusion zone’ confirmed their buildings would be unoccupied during the display.
Teignmouth Town Council said it had not received responses from many of the beach hut owners in the safety exclusion zone despite writing and asking them to confirm they would vacate the area.
A spokesperson for Teignmouth Town Council explained that the demands were due to additional health and safety measures required by the fireworks company operating the display.
However, Teignmouth Town Council confirmed that it has now received responses confirming that the safety exclusion zone required by the fireworks company would be vacated.
‘Teignmouth Town Council thanks beach hut owners on The Point, who have provided assurances that their buildings will be unoccupied during the display on Saturday November 1,’ the spokesperson said.
‘This notice is essential for everyone’s safety and has come about as the result of a contract with new fireworks operators and their requirements over the necessary safety exclusion zone. Marshalls will be on hand during the event and will be advising members of the public not to enter the firing area,’ the spokesperson added. ‘We urge everyone to follow the safety advice given. Safety for all is paramount but Teignmouth Town Council sincerely hopes everyone has a great evening and enjoys the firework display.’
This year’s Shaldon and Teignmouth bonfire and fireworks display has a Jurassic Park theme. The neighbouring councils put on the annual event for free to ensure all residents are able to enjoy a traditional bonfire and fireworks.
