THE second phase of major refurbishment at the Shaftesbury Theatre, Dawlish, began last week.

The money for its upgrading is from the Dawlish Repertory Company, which owns the Shaftesbury, and has so far completed phase one of three in a grand refurbishment scheme, costing around £300,000.

Phase one included increasing the raking – the angle of the tiering for the seat for better viewing – of the auditorium and creating space for new disabled toilet facilities.

Phase two will involve the demolition of the present box office and toilets, to make way for improved facilities, including, for the first time, a disabled toilet. The total cost for phase two will be in the region of £98,000 and the Rep has in hand about £81,000, which includes interest-free loans from members.

A fundraising campaign to bridge the financial gap is under way and anyone with ideas to help the project, or who wish to make a donation, gift or loan, should make contact with the theatre.

The work is scheduled for completion on April 13, and special arrangements have been made for the two film screenings – one last Saturday and one on March 17. The next play, The Understanding, is not affected.

Chairman of the Shaftesbury Quest committee, Iain Wedlake, said: 'This is an exciting venture for the Dawlish Repertory Company and the theatre going public of the area, as phase two will bring about much-needed improvements to a wonderful performance centre, locally owned and managed by the company.'
