The Newton Abbot squash and racketball summer teams’ competition took place at The Rec over a two-month period, with the Spiders emerging victorious, beating 11 other teams.
All the teams were named after insects and provided with colourful T-shirts (sponsored by Charles Royle).
The format for this year was changed to a warm-up of five minutes followed by fixed timed matches of 25 minutes which was well received by all players.
This format provided flexible time-slots with intensive, non-stop fun matches and handicapping was used where required.
The finals night was well attended with some fierce competition and close scores between the four top teams.
Nick Whalley provided much entertainment in his game with Curtis Corby, just managing to seal victory in the last minute of the match with some surprisingly quick chasing of the ball.
Following the finals, a presentation took place.
During the course of the competition, a long-standing member of the Newton Abbot Squash and Racketball Club, Keith Harris, died.
Keith was an active member, supporting the summer teams by organising the raffles and chasing after people for their £1.
To honour Keith’s legacy, a new trophy – The Keith Harris Spirit of Summer Teams Trophy – was awarded to Kathy Bissell for the spirit and participation in the summer teams by always being on time, marking games and her great attitude.
