DAWLISH Bowls Club held their President’s Day on Sunday, April 28, the first formal event of the season for members. The current and past Presidents sponsor an open competition, also providing a buffet after play has concluded. Teams are drawn from a hat, each team plays four games of five ends and the winners are the team with the highest aggregate of points come the end.

Eight teams participated and were treated to an excellent afternoon of friendly but competitive bowling. The weather also cooperated, being both drier and warmer than the forecasters had predicted, which added to everyone’s enjoyment. The eventual winners were Steve Brown, Eddie Kendal and Kevin Gibbins.

Prior to the start of the competition, all the players participated in the aptly named Spider game. Each player chooses a place around the green and at the ringing of a handbell, launches their wood towards a jack located in the centre of the green. After plenty of woods collided, John Stather prevailed, his wood safely ending up within an inch or two of the jack.

Once the final match had concluded, all the players retired to the clubhouse for some much-needed refreshments. Current President John Way congratulated all the players on their efforts and awarded prizes to the gold, silver and bronze medal teams, as well as John Stather for his triumph in the Spider. He wished all players an enjoyable and successful season and was warmly applauded by all present.
