DAWLISH Women Walking Football Club have been named Devon FA Club of The Year.
On Thursday, June 26, representatives of the club attended the 2025 Grassroots Football Awards at Winslade Manor, Exeter and were thrilled to accept the award on behalf of the rest of the players.
“We are so proud to have been given this accolade,” said Kirsten Pybus, the club’s manager.
“When we formed 3 years ago none of us ever dreamt, we’d get to this point. To win this award in a county that has so many fabulous teams, being run by amazing volunteers in special.
“We couldn’t have done it without the help of our local sponsors and all our supporters, especially our Kick n Cake players. It’s great for our club and shows how far women’s walking football has progressed in a short period of time.”
Claire Jones, captain of The Cygnets (the club’s over 40s team) said: “This sport offers a chance for some to return to football in a safer environment with less likelihood of injury. We have many players who joined our club to try a new sport and now absolutely love it.
“There is the chance to progress to regional and international teams if you want to or just play at a recreational level.”
Kirsten Pybus continued “Most walking footballers will tell you how great the sport is for their physical and mental health. To have the friendship and support of a group of like-minded women is so reassuring and gives us such confidence.”
With the Women’s Euros being played in July, in conjunction with competition sponsors, AXA, Dawlish are holding a free taster session for all women aged over 40.
It is on Sunday, July 20, at 10.30am at Sandy Lane astro pitch. For more information, check out the club’s Facebook page or email them on [email protected].
