TEIGNMOUTH, Newton Abbot and New Cross RFCs all played and lost their respective fixtures on Saturday, October 11.
Starting with the Teigns and a depleted side went down to a 42-5 defeat at Okehampton in South West Two West.
Teignmouth, who had players out of position filling gaps, did well to restrict Okehampton to a 14-5 lead after 40 minutes.
Hooker Pete Parsons started in the centre and flanker Pete Bilham found himself on the wing.
The second half was a different story as Okehampton ran in four tries without reply to emerge comfortable winners.
Teignmouth’s prospects were not helped by running out of replacements and finishing with just 13 players on the park.
Dom Twine was the Teignmouth try scorer.
Leon Horn scored Okehampton’s first and last tries, both of which were converted by captain Luke Simmons.
Simmons did not miss a kick all afternoon as he was seven from seven off the tee. Brandon Horn, Simmons, Sonny Luxton and Josh McCulloch were the other try scorers.
Teignmouth have now gone three games without a win in South West Two on the way down to eighth in the table.
Coach Colin Stewart will be hoping for better player availability when Wadebridge visit Bitton Park this Saturday.
NEWTON Abbot will be aiming to avoid a third successive defeat of their own when they visit Kingsbridge in Western Counties West next.
The All Whites had been hoping to rediscover their winning touch at home to Barnstaple Athletic last time out having lost their 100 per cent record seven days earlier at St Ives.
And when Newton Abbot shot into an early 7-0 lead, the signs seemed promising.
Three times Newton Abbot went ahead and three times Barnstaple wiped out the deficit to hit the front.
Patrick Henry (2) and Harrison Greenslade scored the tries that put Barum 15-14 up at the end-change.
Two tries in five minutes immediately after half time gave Barnstaple the lead – and this time they did not lose it.
Euan Kent and Cameron Johnson bagged the second-half tries that pushed the team further ahead. Greenslade added a penalty and a conversion.
It got a bit hairy in the last 10 minutes when Newton Abbot edged back to 27-24 down, but Greenslade’s late penalty calmed a few nerves in the Barnstaple camp.
Newton Abbot’s try scorers were Callum Westaway, Owen McLeod and Jed Griffin. Jake Monnington converted all three tries. Josh Lang kicked a penalty.
Veteran prop forward Lloyd Radford was selected by the sponsors as man-of-the-match.
Finally to New Cross and their coach Jerry Wotton doffed his cap to Exmouth Quins after they defeated his side 50-17 in Devon Two North & East.
“Exmouth were a very good side – quick and well organised,” said Wotton.
“If they are able to keep that side together, they will win our league.”
Playing at stand-off for Exmouth was Tom Steer, who was player-coach at Newton Abbot in South West Two West last season.
The New Cross try scorers were Shaun Bayliss, Lewis Short and Cam Jelly. Nick Halse, a former Exmouth player, kicked one conversion.
Wotton & Co will be aiming to turn things round this Saturday in the derby clash with Newton Abbot Spartans just down the Kingsteignton Road at Rackerhayes.
