AMIDST their solid Counties One Western West campaign to date, Newton Abbot RFC 1st XV have a potential shining jewel in the form of a cup final.
Promotion is highly unlikely for the All Whites this year and they have their fate in their own hands at the other end of the table so to hoist silverware aloft, and to do so in front of their own supporters, would make for a day to remember.
On Saturday, March 14, they will welcome Cullompton RFC to Rackerhayes with the Devon Intermediate Cup on the line.
Newton Abbot won the competition previously in 2022, beating Kingsbridge RFC 31-22 at the final hurdle having already secured league promotion prior to the final.
Four years ago, they had home advantage on their side too and this could well spur them on to yet another glorious day.
Cullompton ply their trade in the league above, making this no easy task, but they are struggling to keep their heads above water in Regional Two South West.
Having won just four of their 19 league games to date, their currently have 24 points in their tally and only a winless Wellington RFC team below them in the standings.
Competing at the same level last year, Cully narrowly beat Newton Abbot both home and away.
On the other hand, Newton sit eighth in their division with the majority of their points being accumulated at Rackerhayes. Three sides are within striking distance of them and two of those, Torquay Athletic and Penryn, have games in hand to cash in.
This final was previously scheduled for Sunday, February 8, but with a re-arranged league match against Barnstaple IIs the day prior taking precedence and Cullompton facing a similar complication, hopefully it will be second time lucky.
There will be a pre-match roast dinner on Saturday to get everybody in the spirit and ready for a big afternoon of rugby.
