TEIGNMOUTH RFC 1st XV are well on the way to appointing a new coach following the departure of Colin Stewart after seven years with the club.

Officials are not saying who is on the shortlist, although rumours of an Exeter Chiefs academy coach candidate have been circulating since Stewart’s departure became public.

A Teignmouth spokesman confirmed discussions with at least one potential candidate are at a very early stage. He hinted there may be other interested parties.

Senior players Faolan Lidstone, Jamie Gray, Dan Force and Mark Brookfield are looking after team affairs while the search for a new coach carries on.

Stewart was relieved of his duties after a disappointing start to the season left the Teigns winless after three games.

Teignmouth were due to visit Wadebridge last Saturday. The game was postponed due to debris on the pitch and has been rearranged for November 7.

This was the only game in the South West Two division not to go ahead on the weekend with five fixtures battling through the storm.

Leaders Penzance & Newlyn made it five wins from five at the summit and in the process, they knocked opponents Okehampton down from second to fifth. 5-13 was the score at The Showground.

Tiverton replaced the Okes in second after edging out Nailsea & Backwell 29-24 on home turf.

Ivybridge and North Petherton now occupy third and fourth respectively although there is only a matter of points between them all.

Crediton were beaten by Ivybridge 12-31 and North Petherton went away to rock-bottom Winscombe and won 5-31.

Lastly, Wiveliscombe got their first win of the season when they dispatched Sherborne 22-5.

Of course, the Teigns’ next outing sees them welcome Wivvy to Bitton Park on Halloween, hoping to deny them back-to-back successes and break their own losing run in the process.
