COOMBESHEAD Academy, Newton Abbot, has been presented with an International School Award by the British Council at a ceremony held at the council house in Plymouth earlier this month.

It earned the achievement for its effort to increase learning across curricular and extra curricular activities to enhance the students’ understanding of different cultures as well as heightening their ability to work in an interconnected global community. The academy has attempted to make global links across subjects including maths, English and drama.

This can also be seen in activities outside school hours which allow students to learn about affairs happening abroad such as the Amnesty International Club, but they also travel to different countries including France, Poland and Uganda.

Abigail Wright, a geography teacher at the academy, is the woman behind the award.

She said: ‘Coombeshead Academy works incredibly hard at making sure global learning is an important element of day-to-day life for our students.

‘It is nice to have an award that recognises both the hard work of teachers and students in this respect.’
