BOVEY TRACEY

BOVEY Tracey Bowls Club’s Kenny Breame, Chris Shorland and Roger Bailey (pictured) have won the Devon County Section Five final of the Men's Unbadged Triples, winning by 20 shots to 11 against strong opposition from Shaldon.

The Bovey team made the most of home advantage to race into an early lead before Shaldon got going to level the score but, following a five on one end, Bovey forged ahead to run out worthy winners. They will now play in the Devon quarter final at Seaton on a date to be confirmed.

Bovey were also represented in another section final by Tyler Smith and Alastair Franklin playing in the men's Unbadged Pairs against Abbrook Park.

This was their first ever final at this level and, although putting up a good fight, they were ultimately beaten by an experienced pair. Nevertheless, this will only make them stronger next time and they can feel proud to have made it so far.

In the ladies' South Devon League, Bovey played two matches during the week, winning both to gain some much-needed league points. At home against Dawlish Marina, a great performance resulted in an 8-2 win and at Belgrave another strong showing led to Bovey taking all 10 points.

Another excellent showing in the ladies' Triples Challenge against Ipplepen resulted in Bovey taking all six league points.

However, the men's Over 55s teams did less well this week with the Xmen slipping up at Bitton Park and the Ys losing at home against the same opponents, both losing by eight points to nil.

Bovey's men's team had another good Mid Devon League result, winning their match against Chudleigh by two rinks to one with one drawn to gain 11 league points and establish themselves firmly in mid-table of Division Two.

The Men's Over 55s Y team finally achieved the result which truly reflected their performances, winning well on both rinks at Newton Abbot to take all 8 league points.

The X-men had an opportunity to take six league points from their match against Starcross but dropping a three on the last end meant that their opponents scored the six points to Bovey's two.

Bovey teams were involved in three mixed friendlies, winning two, away at Ottery St Mary and home against Dawlish Marina, and losing at Abbrook Park.

NEWTON ABBOT

Having lost their last game in the SDL at Kings 10-0, Newton Abbot ladies are awaiting other results to see if they have consolidated their place in the league.

Isobel Burley and Julia Barnes will be heading for Leamington Spa at the end of August to play in a mixed over 60s game and the club wish them well.

After a 14-0 win over Stoke Fleming in the MDL Premier League, NA men have given themselves a chance of avoiding relegation but face the most difficult opponents they could, Shaldon, who normally win the league, in their last game.

As long as there are points to play for, Newton Abbot have to keep believing they can achieve a victory and accumulate enough points to stay up.

Newton Abbots men's B-team have slipped down the table and the C-team remain close to the bottom in their respective leagues and like the A-team, the season is rapidly coming to an end so, again, all points are crucial at this stage.

A couple of Newton Abbot members have an upcoming Devon Patrons game at United Services in Barnstaple and indeed, the Devon Patrons will be coming to Newton Abbot on August 20, for a game always supported well by club members.
